Fast food breakfast is the most time-sensitive meal in the business. Miss the cutoff by five minutes and the menu flips to burgers. We compared the breakfast menus of every chain we cover that serves breakfast, with hours, cutoffs and prices verified from our own chain pages. Prices vary by location, because most chains are franchised.

Breakfast Hours and Cutoffs

Cutoffs are the part people get wrong most often. McDonald’s stops serving breakfast at 10:30 AM on weekdays and 11 AM on weekends. Chick-fil-A serves breakfast 6:30–10:30 AM with a strict 10:30 cutoff — and the whole chain is closed on Sundays. Wendy’s breakfast ends around 10:30 AM. Del Taco breakfast runs until 10:45 AM at most locations.

The two exceptions are worth knowing. Sonic serves breakfast all day, from open to close — if you want a Breakfast Burrito at 2 PM, you can have one. Whataburger runs breakfast from 11 PM to 11 AM every day, a 12-hour window that covers late-night and early-morning eaters. If you are the kind of person who wants breakfast at midnight, Whataburger is your only option on this list.

Popeyes is the odd one out: breakfast is only served at select locations, mostly in Louisiana and a few test markets. The Honey Chicken Biscuit, launched Sept 28, 2026, is the workaround — it is served all day nationwide at $5.

Best Breakfast for Under $5

Breakfast is where cheap fast food still works. The best under-$5 breakfasts we verified:

• Del Taco breakfast tacos — from ~$1.79 each. Two tacos cost less than any burrito and fill most people up.
• Sonic Breakfast Burrito — $1.59–$2.69. The cheapest hot breakfast on any menu we cover.
• Bojangles plain biscuit — $1.75–$1.88. Add a Sausage Biscuit ($3.26–$3.39) and you have two biscuits for about $5.
• McDonald’s Sausage Burrito — $2.69. Under $3 on the McValue menu, and it is a real breakfast item, not a side.
• McDonald’s Hash Browns — $1.19–$2.69 depending on the source and market.
• Chick-fil-A Buttered Biscuit + Hash Browns — $1.65–$2.09 + $1.75–$2.69 = $3.40–$4.78 for a light breakfast under $5.
• Wendy’s Seasoned Potatoes — $1.69–$2.29. The cheapest side on the breakfast menu.
• Whataburger Biscuit / Hash Brown Sticks — $1.99 each. The cheapest breakfast items at Whataburger.

Best Breakfast Combos and Deals

McDonald’s $4 Breakfast Meal Deal — a Sausage McMuffin or Sausage Biscuit plus hash browns and a small McCafé coffee for $4, launched April 21, 2026, at participating restaurants. It is the best breakfast bundle on this page: three items, four bucks.

Wendy’s 2 for $3 Biggie Bundles — mix and match two breakfast items for $3: Sausage Biscuit, Egg & Cheese Biscuit, Small Seasoned Potatoes, or Medium Hot Coffee. The Biggie Breakfast Bag (Sausage Biscuit + seasoned potatoes + coffee) runs around $4 at participating locations.

Bojangles biscuit combos — combos come with Bo-Tato Rounds and a drink. The Cajun Filet Biscuit combo is $9.56 (solo biscuit $5.53). The Sausage Biscuit combo runs $7.30–$7.42. And Bojangles runs a rotating 2 for $4 biscuit deal during breakfast hours — two biscuit sandwiches for $4 — though it is not permanent, so check the app.

Sonic breakfast combos — a burrito or toaster with tots and a drink runs $6.99–$8.99, which beats ordering separately. The SuperSONIC Breakfast Burrito ($3.39–$6.29) packs the most food per dollar of any Sonic breakfast item.

Whataburger breakfast — the Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit ($3.50–$5.50) is the item people drive out of their way for. A $3.99 biscuit plus $1.99 hash browns is more food for less money than most breakfast Whatameals. Adding fries and a drink to a breakfast sandwich runs about $3–$4 extra.

What to Skip at Breakfast

Breakfast combos you do not need. A McDonald’s Sausage, Egg & Cheese McGriddles Meal runs $11.29 and a Sausage Burrito Meal runs $11.09 — both cost more than the $4 Breakfast Meal Deal for less food. At Bojangles, our value page flags the Sausage, Egg & Cheese Biscuit combo at $9+ as a skip when the Sausage Biscuit alone is $3.26–$3.39.

Delivery breakfast. Bojangles delivery menus run $0.50–$1.50 higher per item than in-store. A $3.39 biscuit becomes $4.50+ before fees. Breakfast is a pickup meal.

Assuming breakfast is served all day everywhere. Only Sonic serves breakfast all day. Every other chain on this page has a cutoff, and Whataburger’s 11 AM cutoff is easy to miss if you sleep in.
